This in-depth scientific research presentation and discussion on the featured speaker's latest findings will provide scholars with an experi ence of how faculty members share and teach about novel knowledge in their fields.
This portion of the seminar is accessible to both sc holars and Department of Anesthesiology members\, and all will be given the opportunity to ask questions after the talk if desired.
Dr. Gilpin completed his undergraduate tr aining in Psychology at University of Texas at Austin\, and his Ph.D. in Ps ychobiology at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. He the n went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship in the labs of Drs. George Koob and Marisa Roberto at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla\, CA \, where he used behavioral pharmacology & electrophysiology techniques to explore neural and behavioral dysregulation associated with alcohol depende nce.
Dr. Gilpin is currently the Associate Director of the LSUHSC Alc ohol & Drug Abuse Center of Excellence\, the goal of which is to stimulate interdisciplinary collaborative efforts for research\, teaching\, and infor mation dissemination related to alcohol and drug abuse. He is also appointe d at the V.A.\, where his research is supported by a Merit grant. At LSUHSC Dr Gilpin is a course director on human physiology and biostatistics for G rad Students.
His lab focuses on understanding the neurobiology of ad diction and stress reactivity. His studies are currently funded by the Nati onal Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to explore the role of amygdala peptides and amygdala circuitry in escalation of alcohol use af ter traumatic stress exposure.
Throughout his career\, Dr. Gilpin pub lished over 60 peer-reviewed articles\, served in numerous research review committees\, and organized and chaired many scientific meetings and symposi a. In January 2017\, Dr. Gilpin received the Presidential Early Career Awar d for Scientists & Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama.
Dr. Gilpi n is a strong advocate for racial equity in STEM fields\, has published an extremely important article on “Racial inequity in grant funding from the N IH” with Dr. Taffe from UCSD\, and has founded a fantastic “Racial Equity i n Science” Slack Forum devoted to discussing topics\, sharing and gathering resources\, and generating actions related to improving racial equity in S cience and Academia – a forum you can all join.
