 </p><hr /><p><strong><em>About Charl de Wet</em></strong></p><p class="p1">
 Charl de Wet\, MBChB\, started taking piano and cello lessons as a child in
  South Africa. He appeared as soloist with several South African orchestras
  and was a member of the South African National Youth orchestra. In 1982\, 
 he won 4th prize at the International Piano Competition in Montevideo\, Uru
 guay.</p><p class="p1">After high school\, he participated in masterclasses
  with the famous American pianist\, Leon Fleisher\, at the Peabody Conserva
 tory of Music in Baltimore\, Maryland\, and was subsequently accepted as a 
 student of his. He however returned to South Africa and decided to study me
 dicine. Dr. De Wet completed his medical degree at the University of Pretor
 ia\, South Africa\, and started residency training at the University of the
  Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg. During this time\, he also participated in a
 n international competition for duo pianists in Munich\, Germany\, where he
  ended up among the top 5 duos.</p><p class="p1">In 1994\, Dr. De Wet retur
 ned to the United States and completed his Anesthesia residency training at
  the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicag
 o and also did an elective rotation in cardiac anesthesia at Texas Heart In
 stitute. Following residency training\, he completed fellowships in critica
 l care at Stanford Medical Center and completed a pediatric cardiac anesthe
 siology fellowship at the University of California\, San Francisco.</p><p c
 lass="p1">Dr. De Wet joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington 
 University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2000 where he is currently Pr
 ofessor of Anesthesiology and Surgery. He is a member of the divisions of c
 ardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care and has been the medical directo
 r of the CTICU since 2005.</p><p class="p1">Since 2009\, he has completed 1
 7 marathons including St. Louis\, Chicago\, New York\, and Berlin. He quali
 fied and completed the Boston Marathon twice and has run the Paris Marathon
  six times. In 2023\, after an absence of almost 30 years\, Dr. De Wet star
 ted playing piano once again. He was one of six finalists in the “Concours 
 International des Grands Amateurs de Piano\,” the largest competition for a
 mateur pianists\, in Paris\, France.</p>
