Quality Assessment And Improvement

INQUIRI is establishing a well-organized quality assessment and improvement process that will help us to achieve our mission. INQUIRI’s chief initial project will be the Systematic Assessment and Targeted Improvement of Services Following Yearlong Surgical Outcomes Surveys (SATISFY-SOS). We intend to obtain data on key outcome variables at thirty days and at one year from all patients who have received care in our operating rooms, pain management centers, and surgical intensive care units. The information will be used to guide future quality assessment and to prioritize quality improvement interventions.


INQUIRI will provide a rich resource for retrospective data reviews, which can generate insightful hypotheses. Prospective, interventional studies will also be facilitated through INQUIRI’s infrastructure and approach. The research activities conducted by INQUIRI will frequently validate and inform its quality improvement interventions.


The recent adoption of electronic health records affords an opportunity to improve communication, to provide clinician decision support, to prevent errors, and to make information accessible to practitioners and patients. INQUIRI will gather information from various data repositories. The information will be utilized for quality assessment, quality improvement and research purposes. We intend to contribute towards the goal of ensuring that meaningful use is derived from electronic health records in order to promote significant and measurable improvements in our patients’ healthcare.


In order to maximize the contributions to patient care both locally and nationally, collaboration with organizations sharing our goals is essential. As such INQUIRI aims to establish strong links with groupings such as the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, the Washington University School of Public Health, the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group, and the Anesthesia Quality Institute.
