Wessman elected to the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Council

Brian Wessman, MD, FCCM, professor of anesthesiology and emergency medicine, has been elected to serve on the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Council, a role that places him among the 23 members governing the society’s global initiatives. His three-year term will begin in February 2025, with the official induction taking place at SCCM’s annual congress meeting in Orlando, Florida.

As a member of the Council, Wessman will contribute to SCCM’s strategic direction, guiding its mission to improve outcomes for critically ill and injured patients. He joins a team that includes SCCM’s five Executive Committee officers—president, president-elect, past president, secretary, and treasurer—alongside eight members representing specialty areas within critical care, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and pediatrics. The Council also has six at-large members and three honorary members, fostering a diverse, interdisciplinary approach to critical care leadership.

SCCM represents over 17,000 critical care professionals across more than 80 countries, supporting advancements in critical care through research, education, and collaboration. Wessman joins SCCM’s leadership team at a pivotal time, as the organization continues its efforts to support critical care specialists worldwide.

“This position offers an important platform to advocate for advancements in critical care that can improve patient outcomes on a global scale,” Wessman said. “I am honored to collaborate with my colleagues on the Council and contribute to SCCM’s mission.”

Wessman’s extensive experience in critical care medicine is complemented by his reputation as a dedicated mentor and advocate for education. Over his 15-year involvement in postgraduate education, he has been instrumental in the growth of the Critical Care Medicine Anesthesiology Fellowship at WashU Medicine, recognized nationally for its comprehensive training. This past spring, Wessman was honored with the 2024 Dean’s Impact Award, celebrating his contributions to critical care education and mentorship.

“Dr. Wessman has been a cornerstone of our critical care program, demonstrating an exceptional commitment to advancing the specialty through innovation, education, and mentorship,” said Anne Drewry, MD, vice chair of anesthesiology and division chief of Critical Care Medicine. “His dedication to our department and to critical care medicine as a whole has been deeply impactful. I have every confidence that he will bring the same passion and vision to the SCCM Council, where his contributions will undoubtedly help shape the future of critical care on a global scale.”

Wessman’s election underscores his dedication to advancing the field of critical care medicine and improving outcomes for critically ill patients worldwide.
