What have you done since residency?
After graduating from residency, I stayed at WashU Medicine to complete a fellowship in obstetric anesthesia. Now, I am faculty—splitting my time between the general operating rooms and obstetrics (both academic and community-based practices). I have really enjoyed becoming involved in education, especially through the roles of resident rotation coordinator for OB anesthesia and associate program director for the OB anesthesia fellowship!
How did WashU’s residency program prepare you for your practice?
The anesthesiology program at WashU Medicine provided me with the opportunity to care for a medically and socially diverse patient population. This allowed me to not only gain exceptional training as a physician, but also grow as a person. Additionally, during my training I was exposed to every subspecialty of anesthesia, often caring for complex patients. This unique experience truly prepared me for any future practice setting and is a distinguishing feature of our residency program!
What advice would you give to applicants?
I would tell applicants that there are many programs where you can receive excellent training. What I found most important when choosing a program was the culture and community amongst the residents and faculty. Residency can be challenging, and you want to ensure you are at a program that will not only help you achieve your career goals, but will support you during the process!
