This course is a part of the Self-Leadership Learning Path, a curated learning journey for WashU staff who want to lead with purpose, confidence and impact – no matter their role. This path offers six engaging instructor-led workshops (available virtually and in person) and three flexible on-demand courses, all designed to help you build the mindset, skillset and habits to lead from within. The sessions within the path do not need to be taken in a specific order, allowing you to progress at your own pace and based on your interests. These courses are available to all WashU staff and faculty at all levels.
Course Description: Even when we know feedback is meant to help, it can still catch us off guard. Receiving feedback is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, but it isn’t always easy. We all react to feedback– what counts is how we move forward from that moment.
This interactive session explores why feedback can feel challenging, and how we can learn to receive it with openness, clarity, and purpose. Drawing on research from Thanks for the Feedback by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, as well as key principles of growth mindset and active listening, participants will develop practical strategies for navigating feedback with intention and resilience. Whether the feedback is expected or surprising, participants will leave better equipped to transform insights into meaningful development.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the emotional and cognitive factors that can make receiving feedback difficult
- Identify and manage common triggers that affect receptivity to feedback
- Apply strategies to stay open, grounded, and curious when receiving feedback
- Reflect on and analyze feedback to determine next steps for growth
- Develop a personal action plan for applying feedback constructively in their work
Join this session and start your journey toward turning feedback—no matter how tough—into a tool for learning and self-leadership.
