Beyond Cultural Competence: Cultural Humility in Clinical Practice

12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.

Meets the IL Licensing Education Requirements for 1-hour of Cultural Competency Education.

Healthcare professionals work with individuals whose identities, experiences, values, and perspectives may differ from their own. Developing the ability to approach these interactions with curiosity, humility, and openness is an essential part of providing respectful, person-centered care and fostering meaningful workplace relationships.

This interactive session explores the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility, with a particular focus on their application in clinical practice. Participants will examine the strengths and limitations of cultural competence, consider how cultural humility supports lifelong learning and self-reflection, and practice strategies for building stronger partnerships with patients, learners, colleagues, and communities.

Throughout the session, participants will explore:

  • The concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility, and how they differ
  • The role of self-awareness, curiosity, and reflection in culturally humble practice
  • Practical skills for applying cultural humility in everyday clinical and workplace interactions
  • How situational awareness and flexibility can strengthen communication, trust, and collaboration

Relevant to individuals across WashU Medicine regardless of role or rank, this session may be particularly valuable for healthcare professionals seeking to strengthen culturally responsive practices in clinical, educational, and workplace settings.
