We are partnering with the Washington University Medical Center (WUMC) to aid in stabilizing the neighborhoods surrounding the Washington University Medical Campus.
The Holiday Outreach Program, also known as Adopt-a-Family, is an annual community outreach initiative coordinated by the Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation (WUMCRC) which creates meaningful opportunities for departments at WashU, BJC, and SLCH to help stabilize neighborhoods surrounding the medical campus by assisting families in need.
This year, we have adopted four local families with a goal of raising $10,000 to assist them with utilities, groceries, and more.
Families participating in this program reside primarily in the Forest Park Southeast and Central West End neighborhoods, and 100% of all donations given through this program will go towards assisting participating families.
Meet the Families
Family A consists of a single mother of five children (ages 4, 5, 9, 13, and 16). She writes that she has been directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, is behind on her bills. She would appreciate any help with groceries, household cleaning supplies, funds for medicine, gasoline, and clothes for her children.
Family B consists of a family of five and includes three children (ages 5, 7, and 11). Their home was recently deemed unlivable due to the landlord not keeping up with the building, causing them to have to find a new place to live on short notice. The husband was recently diagnosed with heart failure as a result of lung disease and has recently been in and out of the hospital, sometimes for weeks at a time. They would appreciate any help with groceries, clothing for their children, household cleaning supplies, gasoline, and medicine.
Family C consists of an 18-year-old and a 55-year-old. The 18-year-old is a first-year student at a local college and works part-time. During the pandemic, she had her hours reduced significantly and is struggling to find a way to pay for her education, however, she is determined to complete her degree. They would greatly appreciate any assistance with food, medicine, gasoline, household/cleaning supplies, and clothing.
Family D consists of two adults (22 and 38) and four children, ages 1, 5, 8, and 13. Because of the pandemic, this family has fallen on numerous hardships and the adults are struggling to find a steady job to pay for everyday groceries and bills.
How to Donate
- Make a donation through the WUMCRC’s secure portal and be sure to identify the Family Fund #3 in the Family Number Field. The Department of Anesthesiology is sponsoring four families this year and by entering Family Fund #3, funds raised will be equitably divided among our four families to provide groceries, clothing, and other needed supplies.
Prefer to donate via check or cash? No problem! Please visit (or inter-office mail) your donation to Leigh Ann Zupan, located in the Northwest Tower offices, Suite 1270. For those who prefer to write a check, please make it out to WashU Medical Center and write Adopt-a-Family and “Family Fund #3” in the memo line.
Other Ways to Help
- Tell your friends! Share a reminder at your next team meeting or print and post this handy flyer in your local break room.
- Check back for updates! We will be posting the Department’s progress towards our goal of $10,000 periodically.
Our 2020 Impact
Thanks to your generous support, last year we achieved our initial goal of $8,000 and ended up raising a total of $12,441! These funds allowed us to purchase everything on the wish lists for both families, in addition to gift cards to help pay for groceries!
Without your donations, these families would have had remarkably different holidays.
Total Raised by WUMCRC
Combined, the WUMCRC Holiday Outreach Program raised $62,388* to assist 80 local families and provide much-needed household items and food to more than 171 low-income senior citizens.
*This total does not reflect the value of physical goods (clothes, toys, etc.) donated through the program.
Families participating in this program reside primarily in the Forest Park Southeast and Central West End Neighborhoods. Each year, the WUMCRC reaches out to neighborhood stakeholders (example: elementary school teachers) to identify local families in need and provide them with applications.
When filling out the donation form, be sure to enter “Family Fund #3” in the Family Number Field. The Department of Anesthesiology is sponsoring four families this year and once we’ve ensured each family is warm and safe, funds raised will be equitably divided among our four families to provide groceries, clothing, and other needed supplies.
No. The WUMCRC will not disclose individual charitable donation information to the department. Instead, the department will be periodically given updates on the total amount and count of donors.
