Goldfarb School of Nursing, including the nurse anesthesia program, celebrated its commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at Powell Symphony Hall. Overall, nine graduates completed their nurse anesthesia education and received a Doctor of Nursing Practice—the first cohort to graduate with a doctoral degree. Congratulations to the entire Class of 2022 Nurse Anesthesia cohort!
The Department of Anesthesiology received a bronze award from the Office of Sustainability during the 5th Annual Green Carpet Awards ceremony for the strides made to reduce our environmental footprint in the Peters Building in Barnes-Jewish Hospital (South) on the medical campus.
Industry Awards
Brandon Tan, MD, PGY5 and an ASAP trainee, has been selected as one of the 2023 Dean’s Scholars. His project explores how the serotonin 3 receptor—implicated in nausea, depression, anxiety, and psychosis—changes its activity when the lipid environment is altered.
Vice Chair and Chief of Critical Care Medicine, Anne Drewry, MD, has been elected to serve as the vice chair for the SOCCA Service Chiefs’ Advisory Council.
Joanna Abraham, PhD, FAMIA, associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Institute for Informatics, was elected a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).
Jacob AuBuchon, MD, Bernadette Henrichs, PHD, CRNA, CCRN, CHSE, and Amjad Musleh, MD, have been selected as members to the Academy of Educators at Washington University School of Medicine.
New Appointments
The Department of Anesthesiology is delighted to announce that Burel R. Goodin, PhD, is joining Washington University School of Medicine as professor of anesthesiology March 1, 2023.
Dr. Helga Komen has accepted the role of an anesthesiology physician leader in POD 5 at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. In this important clinical leadership role, Dr. Komen will work closely with the WUSM and BJH perioperative leaders in supporting faculty and staff, and promoting safety, quality, and efficiency of perioperative care in POD 5. She will further our efforts towards enhancing teamwork, diversity and inclusion, and ensuring that POD 5 is a nurturing and safe environment for all members of the healthcare team
Alex Mohrmann has been named the CRNA Clinical Chief at BJH. In his new role, Alex will have the opportunity to build upon his experience as CRNA team leader to make a meaningful impact for our department.
Dr. Sydney Nykiel-Bailey has been selected to serve as the Associate Program Director for the Anesthesiology Residency, where she will continue to develop innovative programs to enhance and enrich the educational experience of our residents.
