Professional development is an important component of personal well-being, personal satisfaction at work, and the ever-increasing effectiveness of workplace teams and individuals.
Each month there will be a 1-hour workshop on a development topic, and a 1-hour workshop on a fundamental self-awareness or skill topic.
Whatever your role is in our department…
Whatever your next professional goal might be…
Wherever your focus is, this series is for you.

Core Development Workshops
The themes of the four workshops and the dates/times offered are listed below. You only need to attend one of the offered sessions for each workshop for a total of four dates.
A vision of success that is built upon one’s personal values, and aligned with one’s picture of ideal work. This can include multiple goals or one encompassing vision. Coaching, as a tool of professional development, is most effective when the focus is on a vision of success. In workshop 1, we will practice exercises to understand what the ideal self is for each of us – in our own values and context. And we will focus on setting a goal or vision for working on our personal professional development in the course.

Applying my Strengths Skills Workshop
We will start with a direct assessment of our learning styles preferences, and move into an understanding of our strengths themes as an additional foundation (along with our values and aspirations from Workshop 1, above) for identifying a path for growth. We will also be developing more expertise in understanding others’ talents from a diversity and inclusion lens, recognizing the opportunity to get to know one another in a safe, supportive, learning-oriented workshop.
A clear understanding of one’s current situation at work vis a vis one’s goals. The real self can be considered our current starting point on the development journey. Where we are can be informed by our own perception, the perception of others, and objective measures. Our own perception includes our view and also our assumptions about others’ views of us. Separate from our assumptions, others’ views of our real self can be elicited and help to inform our view – to reinforce areas of successes or challenges, or to refute disconnects between how we see our position and how others do. Objective measures that may be relevant to our personal values are also important to consider, such as position and responsibilities. In workshop 2, we will discover the challenges of knowing our real self, and consider ways in which we will seek out the real self information we need to be able to make informed decisions about where we are on the path toward our ideal self.

Crucial Conversations Skills Workshop
Is a system for approaching difficult conversations that relies upon a simple process and helps to build a practice of emotional intelligence into our interpersonal communication. It is a fundamental set of skills that will be helpful in our day-to-day work and essential if we are to be effective in our own professional development, including inviting and receiving feedback and identifying ways to improve our approach to developing resonant relationships. The book from which the workshop is derived will also be available as a lit-club discussion.
In comparing our well-understood real self and our ideal self, we can identify areas in which we are already at our ideal, and areas in which we have a gap toward achieving it. In the areas in which there is a gap, we can focus our intentional development efforts on crossing the gap – bringing our real self closer to our ideal in one or more ways. The learning plan can be as simple as taking a course, or as complex as trying a new behavior and seeking feedback on its effectiveness. Developing a learning plan is a critical event in Intentional Change. In Workshop 3, we will discuss methods for developing a learning plan, including exploring local and distance options, utilizing mentoring, coaching, and other relationships.

Getting and Using Feedback Skills Workshop
Having feedback training expertise within the department is a great opportunity to showcase some of our educators in support of our staff and faculty even more broadly. Having a learning approach to professional development is a great start, what we need to learn is where we are effective and where our opportunities for growth exist. This will be a specific application of our Crucial Conversations® practice, and a reminder of the Intentional Change Theory and application – making use of the feedback.
Every aspect of our intentional change is connected to other people. Some provide inspiration for our ideal selves, our visions and goals. Some provide feedback for our real selves, where we are and how we are succeeding today. Others might provide recommendations for our learning plans, or feedback on our changes. Being able to recognize these valuable relationships, to cultivate them with the people who will root for our success and help us to become our best, can be the leverage we need to reach our highest goals. This workshop will focus on identifying and leveraging these relationships, nurturing what we have, seeking out what we need, and avoiding some of the pitfalls that exist in certain networking situations.

Coaching Skills for Peers and Mentors Skills Workshop
Coaching is a skill set that can be effectively used at every level and for peers, reports, and even in managing up. It also relies on some of the same communication framework learned in Crucial Conversations®. We will teach and practice these skills, and the participants will then have homework – coach one another at regular intervals to complete the Intentional Change cycle. This will add a great skillset for developing others, foster a coaching-culture within the group, and increase accountability for the changes our participants elect to make.
