We are happy to welcome Dr. Onat Bermede to the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He will have an appointment in the Division of General Anesthesia as a full-time faculty member.

We are happy to welcome Dr. Alicia Jeffcoat as a locums faculty. Her work will mainly be in the Cardiothoracic Division, but she will also spend some clinical time in the General Division. 

Haroutounian named Preclinical Teacher of the Year

Simon Haroutounian, PhD, MSc, chief of the Division of Clinical and Translational Research (DoCTR) and chief of Clinical Pain Research at the Washington University Pain Center, has been honored with the Preclinical Teacher of the Year award by the graduating Class of 2024.

The Greenhouse Gas Project, an initiative in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology, targets various factors contributing to high GHG emissions, with particular emphasis on nitrous oxide. By prioritizing sustainability, the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology is not only reducing its carbon footprint, but also setting a precedent for other institutions to follow—showing how healthcare can play a crucial role in safeguarding the environment for future generations.

A Day in the Life of Omokhaye M. Higo, MD, MBA

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, physicians play diverse and demanding roles, often navigating between administrative responsibilities and hands-on patient care. Dr. Higo shares a glimpse into his daily routine as a physician who holds the position of vice-chair of innovation while carrying a whole load of clinical responsibilities. His unique role involves managing administrative tasks, providing anesthesia for complex neurosurgical ENT or spine cases in the operating room, and tending to patients in intensive care units (ICUs) across multiple hospitals within our healthcare system.

Celebrating Dr. Markowitz’s contributions as he departs

We thank Dr. Markowitz for his valuable contributions as a leader and appreciate that he is leaving the PDDEI/W office in such great hands with a successful handoff to three outstanding and experienced leaders. We have enjoyed and benefitted immensely from his time in the department and wish him all the best in his next adventure.
