Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our Advanced Practice Provider (APP) program in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Our program has been in existence since 2000 when the first APP in surgical critical care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine was hired into the department. Since that time, our APP team has expanded not only in number but also in the critical care areas we staff. Our reach has extended beyond the surgical/burn/trauma ICU to include our cardiothoracic and surgical-oncology ICUs on our main campus at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, ICUs in some of our affiliate community hospitals, and telemedicine. Our highly skilled APPs, including acute care nurse practitioners and physician assistants, practice to the fullest extent of their scope of practice in challenging, yet rewarding, and intellectually stimulating environments where everyone is welcomed, respected, and supported.

I was that APP hired in 2000. Over time, plenty of things have changed. However, some things have stayed the same. The diverse and challenging patient populations and the culture of collaboration, accountability, and respect within our multidisciplinary teams have endured the test of time. We work alongside some of the brightest and most talented minds in nursing and medicine. I truly value the collegial relationships and friendships I have made along the way. I take pride in our team, the high-quality care we deliver for our community, and the education we provide to those in training.
