Annually the department hosts a lecture named in honor of C.R. Stephen, MD, F.F.A.R.C.S. Washington University School of Medicine named him professor and chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology in 1971 and concurrently he was named anesthesiologist-in-chief at Barnes and St. Louis Children’s hospitals. Dr. Stephen was the author of more than 160 scientific papers and two monographs. He also received many honors throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Anesthesiologists, was an associate examiner with the American Board of Anesthesiology and, in 1981, he received the ASA Distinguished Service Award.
