The Department of Anesthesiology’s 1600 square foot Clinical Simulation Center has two simulation suites with full-scale electromechanical mannequins used to train anesthesia residents as well as residents and nurses in other disciplines. The computerized mannequins exhibit many of the features of a human being including blinking, breathing, heart sounds, breath sounds, and palpable pulses. The simulators’ software and hardware allow a myriad of patient problems to be reproduced. An instructor controls the symptom programming via a computer in the control room. In addition to the Clinical Simulation Center, members of the department manage Washington University School of Medicine’s Howard & Joyce Wood Simulation Center.
