The newly announced 2023 Dean’s Impact Awards recognize 48 faculty members across the School of Medicine, six of whom are from the Department of Anesthesiology, for their exceptional efforts that had a lasting impact.
Members of the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis recently attended and participated in the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, on April 14-16. Three residents, four physicians, and one principal investigator presented on various topics throughout the weekend.
Ashley Weinhold, MD, assistant professor in the Pediatric Anesthesiology division, was recently elected as a Clinical Representative to the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council (ECFC) at the School of Medicine.
Dr. Jose Moron-Concepcion, a professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been appointed to the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council for a four-year term, advising on matters related to dental and craniofacial research, with a focus on opioid addiction and pain research.
The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is pleased to announce Hawa Abubakar, MBBS, has been selected as associate director for the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (ACTA) Fellowship. Dr. Abubakar will join Dr. Emmert in recruitment, education, and mentoring ACTA fellows.
Dr. Danish Jaffer has been selected as the program director of the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program.
In a study published in Nature Communications in March 2023, researchers from the Center for Clinical Pharmacology unveil promising research in the development of more effective, less addictive, and safer pain management drugs.
Brandon Tan, MD, PGY5 and an ASAP trainee, has been selected as one of the 2023 Dean’s Scholars. His project explores how the serotonin 3 receptor—implicated in nausea, depression, anxiety, and psychosis—changes its activity when the lipid environment is altered.

Vice Chair and Chief of Critical Care Medicine, Anne Drewry, MD, has been elected to serve as the vice chair for the SOCCA Service Chiefs’ Advisory Council.
