Nykiel-Bailey appointed Associate Program Director for Residency Program
Dr. Sydney Nykiel-Bailey has been selected to serve as the Associate Program Director for the Anesthesiology Residency, where she will continue to develop innovative programs to enhance and enrich the educational experience of our residents.
Dr. Hawa Abubakar joins the Department of Anesthesiology
Dr. Hawa Abubakar joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis on August 22, 2022. She will have appointments in the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.
Kannampallil named inaugural director of acute care innovation research
Dr. Kannampallil will plan, direct, and coordinate research activities related to technology, telemedicine, and innovation within the department. He will also provide population, organizational, and patient-level data, analysis and decision support to advance innovative and technology-related initiatives for the department.
Three department faculty inducted as members into the Academy of Educators
Jacob AuBuchon, MD, Bernadette Henrichs, PHD, CRNA, CCRN, CHSE, and Amjad Musleh, MD, have been selected as members to the Academy of Educators at Washington University School of Medicine.
Gregory appointed division chief of perioperative medicine
Stephen Gregory, MD, has been selected as the division chief of perioperative medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology. In his role as division chief, Gregory will develop educational programs, conduct innovative perioperative quality improvement programs, support perioperative research, and manage staff, faculty, and trainees within the perioperative medicine division.
Inaugural Sandy Hawes Memorial Award Recipient Announced
Last year, the Department of Anesthesiology established a memorial award in honor of Sandy Hawes, a beloved staffing administrator, friend, and colleague. We are thrilled to announce the inaugural recipient of the Sandy Hawes Memorial Award goes to our Staffing Administrator, Jan Goffstein-Davis!

Sunny Lou, MD, PhD, earns 2022 IARS Mentored Research Award
Dr. Sunny Lou has been awarded the 2022 International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) Mentored Research Award for her project “Intelligent Clinical Decision Support for Perioperative Blood Management.”
Bernadette Henrichs receives AANA’s 43rd annual Helen Lamb Outstanding Educator Award
Bernadette Henrichs, PhD, CRNA, CCRN, CHSE, FAANA, received the 43rd Helen Lamb Outstanding Educator Award from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) for her significant contributions to the education of nurse anesthetists.
