Dr. Gillihan received his medical degree from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (2006) and completed a postgraduate internship in Internal Medicine from Southern Illinois/St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois (2007), before pursuing an anesthesiology residency at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Hospital (2007-2009).  Dr. Gillihan served as Chief Resident in Anesthesiology 2009-2010.  He subsequently joined the faculty of Wabash General Hospital as Staff Anesthesiologist and Director of the Department of Anesthesiology (2010-2013).

Dr. Gillihan re-joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in 2013 as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and rapidly established himself as a valuable and committed leader.  During his tenure with our department, he has already held several important leadership positions, including the Associate Director of Clinical Anesthesiology (2017-present), Director, Trauma Anesthesiology (2018-present), and Assistant Chief, Section of Trauma Anesthesiology (2013-2018).

Dr. Gillihan will assume his new role effective November 1, 2019. In this important new role, he will be partnering with the outstanding team of anesthesiologists and CRNAs at BJWCH, other leaders in BJH and Washington University. Other key leaders within the Anesthesiology Department, including Doctors Chak Lattanand, Ivan Kangrga, Mitchell Fingerman, Courtney Hardy, Ellen Lockhart, Troy Wildes and Stephen Gregory, will all work closely with Dr. Gillihan and other members of the BJWCH Division in order to promote ongoing elevations in quality and safety in the delivery of perioperative care, and to advance the careers of our outstanding anesthesiologists and CRNAs. Dr. Mitchell Fingerman, the Division Chief of Regional Anesthesiology, will collaborate with Dr. Gillihan to ensure that regional anesthesiology is prioritized in the new facility. In partnership with Dr. Gillihan, the Department’s leaders in Perioperative Medicine, Dr. Troy Wildes and Dr. Stephen Gregory, will spearhead the delivery of evidence-based preoperative assessment, planning and optimization, as well as the implementation of innovative perioperative telehealth.

Dr. Gillihan will be receiving the baton from Dr. Ram Volotzky, who will be stepping down from his leadership role on October 31.  Dr. Volotzky has developed an outstanding Division of Anesthesiology at BJWCH over the last 25 years, and I am confident that Dr. Gillihan will continue to build on this impressive platform.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Gillihan on his exciting new leadership position.
