The mission of the William D. Owens Anesthesiology Research Fellowship Award is to support a department scholar for a two-year clinical research or basic research fellowship. The goal is to provide support for activities that will accelerate the awardee’s research program by providing resources needed to collect critical preliminary data in support of future grant applications. The ASSURE fellowship at WashU Medicine provides college students from the St. Louis metro area an opportunity to engage in basic, clinical, and/or translational research projects. 

Under the mentorship of a Department of Anesthesiology faculty member, ASSURE fellows work on projects in a lab or clinical setting, meet with mentors, attend journal clubs, engage in professional development opportunities, receive assistance with graduate school preparation planning, and gain valuable research experience.

The mission of the WashU Medicine Pain Center is to alleviate human suffering from pain through integration of research, education and clinical practice. The Pain Center is a multidisciplinary center that combines basic research, clinical research, clinical pain management and education in an organized, interactive group of dedicated researchers and clinicians.
