We are pleased to announce that Dr. Menelaos Karanikolas has accepted the role of an Anesthesiology Leader in POD 5. Dr. Karanikolas will be partnering with WUDA physicians and CRNA leaders in the POD, continuing the tradition of excellent patient care and clinical leadership in the largest OR POD at BJH.
In this role, Dr. Karanikolas will work closely with the WUSM and BJH perioperative leaders in supporting clinical staff and promoting safety, quality, and efficiency in perioperative care. He will further support our efforts to enhance teamwork, diversity and inclusion, and to ensure that POD 5 is a nurturing and safe environment for all members of the healthcare team. Dr. Karanikolas has demonstrated outstanding leadership and with his vast amount of experience, he will be a valued addition to the department’s clinical leadership team.
Dr. Karanikolas is currently an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology. He received his medical degree at Athens University School of Medicine in Athens, Greece, and completed residency in Anesthesiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Karanikolas completed three fellowships (Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Pain Management, and Critical Care) before joining faculty at Washington University in St. Louis in 1998. Dr. Karanikolas is an excellent clinician who works in BJH general operating rooms and is a member of the trauma team.
