The WashU Medicine Department of Anesthesiology T32 training program is a prestigious NIH-funded initiative designed to prepare the next generation of anesthesiology researchers. Through expert mentorship, state-of-the-art facilities, and a focus on high-priority scientific areas, the program supports physician and doctoral scientists in developing impactful research and leadership skills. T32 trainees gain access to personalized career development, networking opportunities, and collaborative training environments, with a track record of success in publishing, securing grants, and advancing to prominent academic roles.
The Fellowship appointment is for up to 24 months and provides salary support, modest funds for research support, tuition, childcare assistance (if applicable), and 75% minimum time dedicated to research.
Candidates must have:
- completed an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD equivalent,
- have demonstrated strong background in research relating to anesthesiology, and
- be eligible for NIH funding support (U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residence).
Other information:
- Anesthesiology-related research will be broadly interpreted to include topics relating to critical illness, pain, consciousness, and pharmacology when considering applications.
- Applicants in a clinical fellowship training position that provides 75% or greater effort for research are welcome to apply.
- Postdoctoral fellows within five years of completing their PhD are also eligible.
- Applicants must have identified an established mentor and a defined research project.
In addition to a short survey in Redcap, applications must include the following:
- NIH (new format) biosketch from the applicant and their research mentor (maximum five pages for each biosketch Arial 11-point font)
- Project tile/area of interest
- One-page description of the research project to be undertaken formatted as an aims page (Arial 11-point font)
- A letter from the applicant describing their research career plans and how the T32 will them achieve them (two page limit)
- A letter of support for the applicant and the proposed project from the research mentor (two-page limit)
- A letter of support from the department head stating that the applicant has 75% protected research time (if the applicant is outside the department of Anesthesiology).
