Umeshkumar Athiraman, MBBS, MD, named director for neuro-anesthesia

We are pleased to announce that Umeshkumar Athiraman, MBBS, MD, has been named the new director for neuro-anesthesia at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
 
In his new role, Dr. Athiraman will oversee the clinical excellence, quality and safety and educational needs of the neuro-anesthesia section. He will work closely with our faculty, CRNA’s, fellows, residents, medical students, nursing and neurosurgical colleagues.

Dr. Athiraman is a graduate of the Stanley Medical College, India. He completed a research fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Boston, Harvard Medical School, followed by his anesthesiology residency at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and a clinical fellowship in neuro-anesthesia at University of Washington. He joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2015.
 
Dr. Athiraman is an accomplished researcher in the field of neuro-anesthesia. He has authored numerous works and participated in multiple research studies. Most recently, he received grant funding for studies involving Isoflurane Conditioning for SAH-Induced Delayed Cerebral Ischemia and the role of Isoflurane Conditioning on Cognitive Functioning following SAH. He continues to collaborate with Dr. Zipfel in his Washington University laboratory as he continues to pursue further research in the field of neuro-anesthesia.
 
Dr. Athiraman has provided leadership in the neuro-anesthesia section, supporting the POD leaders and advising on such matters as protocol development, clinical pathways, and quality improvement processes. He has also served as a program director for the neuro-anesthesia fellowship. His role as an educator has been recognized by our trainees at all levels.
 
Dr. Athiraman will bring a unique combination of talents to his role as Director of Neuro-anesthesia and will advance the clinical, education and research roles in the field of neuro-anesthesia.
