Awardees
| Name | Reason for Nomination |
|---|---|
| Ream Al-Hasani, PhD | Ream is highly deserving of a WELCCOME award for the following reasons: 1) She is an integral member of the DBBS admissions committee. This has been a particularly daunting task given the changes that have occurred at DBBS over the last 6 months. Ream has continued to be a source of positive energy on this committee, and she expertly balances the needs of anesthesiology and the WashU neuroscience community with that of DBBS and the School of Medicine. 2) Ream has worked hard to remove excess gas tanks from the CCP. A previous vendor had not removed gas tanks from the UHSP loading dock for over a year. It is to the point where new tanks cannot be safely stored and EHS from both UHSP and WashU have raised concerns. Ream has worked tirelessly with the vendor to remove these tanks, often calling the company many times a week. 3) At the beginning of November, Ream supported her lab members in spearheading a food donation bin at the CCP for a greater St. Louis food bank collection. She has also identified charitable organizations that would accept extra coffee supplies that were delivered to the CCP by mistake. — Ream is a natural leader whose advocacy, mentorship, and genuine enthusiasm for others make her an invaluable member of our department. She consistently invests in the growth and confidence of her colleagues, particularly through her engagement in the Research Community of Practice, where she builds others up and is always willing to help others work through professional challenges. Ream approaches mentorship with care, providing honest feedback and constructive guidance that not only supports individual development but also strengthens our culture and communication across the team. She celebrates the successes of others with authentic excitement, much like a cheerleader for her colleagues, and her encouragement inspires confidence and collaboration throughout the department. Ream’s thoughtful leadership, generosity, and commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment exemplify the spirit of the WELCCOME Award. |

He is always willing to show anyone in our department how we work and explain who we are. He has fostered many of our residents and SRNA’s and new faculty. He performs above and beyond everyday. — Zek is one of the kindest and most welcoming faculty members in our department. He is the first to step up whenever help is needed and lend a hand without hesitation. His generosity with his time and his unwavering reliability have made him an invaluable member of our team. Zek is known for bringing exceptional skill and calmness to even the most demanding cases. Residents absolutely love working with him because he takes a genuine interest in them as people. He takes every opportunity to teach, turning challenging clinical moments into meaningful learning experiences. His combination of technical excellence, humility, and kindness exemplifies the best of our department. His quiet leadership and steady presence elevate those around him, and his consistent dedication to both patient care, supporting junior faculty, and resident education make him deeply deserving of recognition. |
| Fillmore Almiron, CRNA | Fillmore Almiron demonstrates so many of the qualities that make him deserving of this award. I have witnessed the rapport he develops among the multidisciplinary clinical teams he works with. He treats every member of the team with respect, creating the space and opportunity for that individual’s qualities and contributions to improve patient care delivery. However, it is not just the patient care that is improved, the environment that everyone is working in is improved. Fillmore has a way of building trust among the team members, and as team trust increases the communication improves, the collaboration increases, efficiency improves, and people literally seem happier when he is around. I have also observed Fillmore apply his skill as an educator with trainees who are navigating challenges and steep learning curves. He is patient and effectively navigates the delicate nature of someone who would benefit from additional guidance but not at the cost of the individual’s self-esteem or confidence. We are lucky to have someone who is as genuine, sincere, and capable as Fillmore. He exemplifies the welcoming spirit of this award to the highest degree and I am inspired by his character. |

In her leadership roles, she juggles many competing priorities and balances many perspectives, which are well-served by her expertise, conflict management skills, and passion for advocacy. |
| Kara Bockius | Kara, the program coordinator for the critical care medicine fellowship, is the first contact CCM trainees have with the program. And almost to a person…the final request they make is if they can remain in contact with Kara. She truly goes above and beyond her role as PC. All of the Fellows have her direct cell phone number and they use it often. She has received calls about clinical issues, dog bites, insurance questions, rent problems, and “I just need a supporting voice”. She helps our Fellowship with our Wellness efforts and is always looking at ways to “remain within budget” but also support our trainees and make them feel appreciated. Long after they graduate, our CCM Fellows still use her as a resource to get papers signed, access an old article or lecture, or just to “socially catch up”. I am truly grateful for Kara and the warm environment she creates for trainees (and for Fellowship Faculty). I can think of no one more deserving for a 2025 WELCOME award. |

As Administrative Director for Patient Safety and Quality, she brings clarity and strength to issues that are often overlooked or deprioritized. She is passionate and unyielding in her commitment to the importance of her specialty area, and she holds others accountable for their level of investment as well. Mara was among the first to recognize that clinician well-being, psychological safety, and patient safety are inseparable – and she has consistently championed alignment between these domains. Mara advocates for non-punitive systems that focus on learning, accountability, and continuous improvement rather than blame. He approaches every challenge with patience and kindness, ensuring that faculty and trainees and staff feel supported in navigating financial processes. Jon’s direct communication and steady guidance provides a supportive environment for the research divisions and his own team members across the board. In pediatric anesthesiology, we value community. Sara works collaboratively with the Wellness team in a thoughtful and kind manner and reduces the strains required for mission delivery to our patients while bolstering and linking the teams through fellowship. As an example, she and I discussed how we could mitigate the strain of budget reductions for fellowship and Sara jokingling mentioned that we could try end of block breakfasts….. Eureka! What a great idea! Breakfast is less expensive! She joked that we should fund it ourselves! Eureka twice! A signup sheet for faculty. Believe it or not, this was how the end of block breakfast was born. The beauty was in its inception, its focus and its positivity. This is just one example of how Sara Clarkson utilizes her welcoming demeanor and positivity to bring innovation with purpose, problem solving in this case regarding finanes that seemed insurmountable. I expect that Sara has more ideas and I plan to listen! Everyone loves an end-of-block breakfast and it doesn’t break the bank. The faculty feel empowered to coverthe costs one month at a time. Rather than waiting for someone else to address the issue, Hilary escalated the concern, collaborated to identify an appropriate space, and helped facilitate the build-out of a dedicated lactation room. | Mitsukuni Yoshida, MD, PhD | Mitsu is an exemplar trainee and scientist with numerous awards, grants, and accolades to his name. These fail to capture what a collaborative and welcoming team member he is. Whether it is volunteering for medical student events to caring for his fellow trainees, Mitsu is always first in line. Most notably after the devastating tornadoes last spring, Mitsu immediately opened his home to his fellow trainees, their families and pets. He showed up to ravaged apartments with the largest suitcases he had ready to pack up dog food, keepsakes, and clothes and carry them down numerous flights of stairs. He truly showcases what it means to help a co-worker in need. — I’m nominating Mitsu Yoshida for the WELCCOME Award because he truly makes our department a more welcoming, collaborative, and supportive place to work. As an MD/PhD candidate and PGY5 Pain Fellow, he consistently goes above and beyond what’s required of him, especially when it comes to helping new trainees feel comfortable and confident. Dr. Yoshida regularly spends his own time teaching new fellows and residents, walking them through procedures, basic evaluations, and clinical decision making. He’s always the first to share new articles or important updates in the literature, keeping all of us, trainees and faculty included, up to date. His willingness to teach and share knowledge creates an environment where learning feels accessible and encouraged. What really stands out, though, is how much he cares about the people around him. He goes out of his way to check in with new trainees, answer questions, and make sure no one feels lost or left behind. He collaborates with researchers across different areas and brings in thoughtful ideas that spark great conversations and potential projects. Above everything, Dr. Yoshida is someone who helps the whole department feel more connected. He has a way of bringing people together, smoothing out communication, and making sure we all work well as a team. His attitude and actions make the pain department feel cohesive, supportive, and easy to be a part of. For all these reasons, I believe he truly represents what the WELCCOME Award is meant to recognize. — Dr. Mitsu Yoshida embodies the essence of the WELCCOME Award through his kindness, humility, and collaborative spirit. As a resident physician in the Academic Scholar Advancement Program (ASAP), Mitsu consistently goes far beyond the expectations of his role to uplift peers, foster belonging, and strengthen the culture of our pain division. His steady, thoughtful, and quietly supportive presence has a grounding effect on everyone around him, and he models daily what it means to create a welcoming, connected, and compassionate clinical environment. For years, Mitsu has been an integral part of the Pain Medicine Fellowship community, helping multiple incoming classes acclimate to a new specialty, a new system, and a new city. He frequently hosts group dinners and informal gatherings for fellows-simple gestures that carry tremendous impact by cultivating camaraderie, collaboration, and mutual support. He does not do this out of obligation; he does it out of genuine care for others and a sincere desire to strengthen our program’s culture. If this does not reflect the spirit of the WELCCOME Award, it is difficult to imagine what would. Mitsu’s academic accomplishments are remarkable: raised in Tokyo and trained at Washington University School of Medicine, he completed both his MD and PhD in Neuroscience in 2021. Yet despite these achievements, he remains one of the most approachable and generous colleagues in our department. He readily offers help to co-residents, patiently guides others in navigating new systems, and exemplifies mindful engagement through his compassion, calm demeanor, and respect for all team members. Mitsu is the type of colleague who quietly makes a department better simply by being part of it. He is deeply deserving of the WELCCOME Award. |
