Train here, thrive anywhere.®

Our trainees thrive in a challenging environment fueled by a spirit of camaraderie and our shared determination to improve care.

Residency & Training

The anesthesiology residency training program at WashU Medicine is uniquely situated to train expert consultants in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine as well as foster the development of physician-scientists. WashU Medicine and the Department of Anesthesiology are international leaders in the fields of basic science and clinical research.

Our residents receive exceptional training and education in these areas and are equipped to take full advantage of future opportunities in community and academic practice, research, and fellowship opportunities in each of these areas.

Fellowship Programs

11 fellowships

Medical education is not static, rather it is an evolutionary process. Continuous evolvement does not happen by accident, it takes foresight and flexibility.

Each of these unique fellowship opportunities is designed to train future leaders in general clinical practice and in the subspecialties of anesthesiology. The goal is not only academic success—it is the development of a lifelong commitment to continued learning.

Simulation Center

Residents and small teams train in the Simulation Center at WashU Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Equipped with the most advanced mannequin-based simulation, the center provides a location for groups of trainees at many levels — practicing physicians, residents, students, nurses, and allied health professionals — to integrate task-training with simulation, with the ability to run a specific scenario repeatedly until the performance of all team members is error-free.
