Department of Anesthesiology APP of the Quarter: February 2022 & September 2025
Shawn was named the APP of the Quarter in Feb. 2022 and Sept. 2025! Here is what his nominators have to say about him:
“Shawn consistently works to improve our APP group, advocate for our group, and enhance our knowledge base. Recently he has been putting in a tremendous amount of effort with the APP US courses and deserves special recognition for his steadfast daily efforts and also this large project he has taken on.”
“Shawn is an incredible leader and educator who sets the tone for our entire team through his openness, support, and dedication. He is genuinely invested in both strengthening our group as a whole and helping each of us grow individually. Whether he’s teaching, mentoring, problem-solving, or simply lending a hand, Shawn consistently goes above and beyond. His ability to balance patient care, leadership, and education is remarkable, and his humility and generosity—like personally supporting our mentorship program—speak volumes about the kind of person he is. We are truly fortunate to have Shawn, not only for the excellent patient care he provides, but for the way he lifts up and inspires every member of the team.”
Congratulations, Shawn!
Clare Ridley, MD
Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine
Department of Anesthesiology Featured Member: September 2020
Clare is an Associate Professor in the departments of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Originally from Atlanta, Clare studied abroad in Rennes, France, in high school and then moved to New York to get a bachelor’s in psychology and creative writing at Columbia. After completing the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program at Columbia, she came to WashU in 2004 for medical school and stayed on for residency. After completing fellowships in CT Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she joined the faculty at WashU, where her husband, Yiing Lin, is a member of the abdominal transplant surgery faculty.
Currently, Clare is the Director of Heart and Lung Transplant Anesthesiology and an Associate Medical Director of the CTICU. Her research has focused on teamwork training and safety outcomes in the CT operating rooms. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga by the window, drawing with her children, Thomas and Eleanor, and eating delicious food.
Since adapting to the COVID era, Clare is happy for her current state of health, for the ease of Zoom meetings, and is enjoying not rushing from activity to activity on the weekends, going to a park with the kids instead. Fun Fact: Clare loves to cut hair, and cuts everyone’s hair in the family.

She subsequently completed her anesthesiology residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ, and then completed two fellowships: one in pediatric anesthesia and then in pain medicine for adult and pediatric patients at the University of Washington in Seattle.
She is passionate about improving chronic pain in the pediatric population as well as optimizing regional anesthesia techniques and multimodal pain regimens for patients undergoing surgeries. She also conducts research on diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education and social determinants of health in conjunction with the department’s Office of Professional Growth & Inclusive Culture.
Outside of work, Tiffany enjoys spending time with her sons, doing home improvement projects, and visiting local festivals in the St. Louis area.
