1. Can you describe your overall experience in the International Program for Anesthesiology Specialists at WashU
This is actually my second term as I worked for Wash U in 2007 and 2008. That was a great opportunity to practice in another department and observe a different practice culture. It is always superb to observe that you are actually capable of practicing at a very sophisticated environment and your work is approved by your peers. For my part it was also a challenge to change my daily practice from pediatrics to adult and trauma anesthesia.
2. How did the program help you grow professionally and personally?
I gained a lot of confidence at the very beginning of my attending career by having the chance of working in another department. I felt always the support of my network during my professional growth.
3. Did the mentorship and support you received impact your career development? If so, how?
Dr. Tempelhoff used to be a great teacher and someone always supportive. It was so comforting to talking to him, having his opinions and taking his advises.
4. Can you share a memorable moment or experience during your time in the program?
During my first interview with Dr. Tempelhoff and Dr. Avidan in 2006 I was about to say I will not be able to proceed due to my responsibilities at the University of Ankara, but I realized that they already reviewed my papers and valued them. This led me to proceed and with this motivation enabled me to push my department to let me come to Wash U. Even though I only managed to stay only one year and returned back to U of Ankara as I gave my word to my Department head that I will come back, later on I retired as a full Professor and returned back to Wash U.
5. Would you recommend the program to others? Why or why not?
Absolutely… I was involved the recruitment process of two more Turkish colleagues.
6. How has your experience in the program influenced your approach to anesthesiology?
Not too much. I was so happy to be anesthesiologist at that time and still on the same page.
