What have you done since residency?

Following residency, I spent a year at University of Alabama at Birmingham for an adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship. I returned to join the faculty at WashU after graduating from fellowship. My clinical time now is split between cardiothoracic anesthesia and perioperative medicine. It is great to be a part of large department with supportive mentors and a wealth of opportunities for professional growth.

How did WashU’s residency program prepare you for your practice?

The residency program at WashU offered unparalleled clinical exposure because of the high-acuity patient population and a tremendous breadth of complex cases across all subspecialties, as evident by the number of subspecialty fellowships available. The large and diverse faculty group provided multiple perspectives on patient care and helped me develop my own practice style. What I have learned and experienced during residency set the foundation for the work I do today. If you’re looking for a program that will challenge, support, and fully prepare you for anything your future practice might demand—this is it.

What advice would you give to applicants?

Invest in your happiness. It will directly impact your overall well-being and success. Figure out what is important for you and what you are willing to sacrifice. My priorities when ranking programs were getting the best training possible and feeling supported by peers and mentors. For others, it may be ample research opportunities or location of the program. Our perception of time is deeply connected to happiness. Four years of residency will fly by if you find a program where you truly belong.
