This course is a part of the Self-Leadership Learning Path, a curated learning journey for WashU staff who want to lead with purpose, confidence and impact – no matter their role. This path offers six engaging instructor-led workshops (available virtually and in person) and three flexible on-demand courses, all designed to help you build the mindset, skillset and habits to lead from within. The sessions within the path do not need to be taken in a specific order, allowing you to progress at your own pace and based on your interests.  These courses are available to all WashU staff and faculty at all levels.

Course Description: Resilience is not just about enduring hard times—it’s about finding meaning, reclaiming joy, and rising again with purpose and clarity. In today’s rapidly changing world, cultivating resilience is a critical life skill that empowers us to navigate uncertainty, spring forward from adversity, and grow through challenge. This highly interactive workshop invites participants to move beyond the idea of simply “powering through” and instead explore the mindset, skillset, and practices that support real, sustainable resilience—individually and in community.

Participants will engage in reflection, storytelling, and small-group dialogue to explore how values, purpose, connection, and emotional agility can be leveraged to build internal reserves and external support systems. Through guided activities, participants will identify their personal sources of strength, map out a resilience plan using real-life tools, and leave with actionable habits to stay grounded and energized in the face of ongoing change.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define resilience in a way that reflects both personal identity and collective experience, distinguishing between surviving and thriving.
  • Identify and reflect on their core values and personal “why” to create an internal foundation for resilience.
  • Apply the Robertson Cooper Model of Resilience to assess current strengths and areas for growth across four domains: purposefulness, confidence, support, and adaptability.
  • Map personal resilience strategies using the “4 S’s” framework—Supportive people, Strategies, Sources of sagacity, and Solution-seeking behaviors.
  • Practice one-minute resilience habits that support mindset shifts, energy renewal, and emotional regulation.
  • Foster psychological safety and give grace—to both themselves and others—by identifying practical ways to create supportive environments that encourage risk-taking, vulnerability, and compassion.
