Head, Department of Anesthesiology
Anesthesiology occupies a remarkable place in medicine. We are present at some of the most consequential junctures in a patient’s care. We uncover and treat health risks that might otherwise go unrecognized, improving both surgical outcomes and long-term health. We carry patients through complex surgery and critical illness and help them return to the lives they want to lead.
At WashU Medicine Anesthesiology, we see that breadth not only as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to shape the future of medicine. The questions we encounter in caring for patients should inspire discovery. Discovery should change how we practice. And everything we learn should inform how we develop the next generation of anesthesiologists, scientists, and leaders.
Our scale across WashU Medicine gives us an extraordinary platform to do this. As our clinical footprint grows across academic, community, and ambulatory settings, we are able to bring together what patients value most: cutting-edge care with the access, convenience, and personal connection of care close to home. We are creating a perioperative ecosystem that brings those strengths together to improve the experience and outcomes of every patient in the communities we serve.
Scientific discovery is fundamental to that ambition. Our department has a strong tradition of research and is the nation’s leading anesthesiology department in NIH funding. Our next opportunity is to build on that strength by connecting discovery even more closely to clinical practice: asking important questions, generating rigorous evidence, and translating what we learn into better outcomes for patients here and beyond WashU Medicine.
None of this happens without exceptional people.
WashU Anesthesiology is where talented people come to do the most meaningful work of their careers. We are committed to creating an environment in which clinicians can pursue excellence, investigators have the support to take important scientific risks, educators can reimagine how we prepare the next generation, and every member of our department has both the opportunity and the team behind them to grow.
Our aspirations are intentionally high. We have the clinical reach, scientific foundation, institutional partnerships, and, most importantly, the people to redefine anesthesiology.
WashU Anesthesiology: where those around you inspire your best, your work makes a difference every day, and you can shape one of the most rewarding chapters of your career.
