Anesthesiology Summer Research Fellowship (ASSURE) Program Launches

New research fellowship provides career support for local college students interested in basic and clinical research.

The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is pleased to announce the new Anesthesiology Summer Research Fellowship (ASSURE) Program.

The ASSURE fellowship program will provide college students from the St. Louis metro area an opportunity to engage in basic, clinical, and/or translational research projects.

In support of the department’s goal to build a pipeline of bright and undiscovered talents, the In support of the department’s goal to build a pipeline of bright and undiscovered talents, the ASSURE fellowship will welcome its first cohort of students in the summer of 2021 with the hope of being able to better attract, train, mentor, and provide long term career support for undergraduate students in the St. Louis metro area.

Each awardee will work with mentor(s) and students at various stages in their academic career and will participate in research opportunities across the translational research spectrum – from fundamental research in laboratories to clinical research involving human subjects.

The ASSURE fellowship program will also offer opportunities for fellows to interact with other trainees and live in WashU campus housing with other undergraduate research students during this 10-week fellowship.

Fellows will also attend a research ethics workshop sponsored by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research, as well as participate in journal clubs and data blitzes.

In support of the program’s diversity goals, the following faculty and diversity leaders will advise on the program’s structure, best practices for student development, building networks, growing the program, and on external funding options and strategies:

  • Erik Herzog, PhD, Professor, Biology; Director, St. Louis Neuroscience Pipeline Program
  • Ellen Lockhart, MD, Vice-Chair for Faculty Affairs, Anesthesiology
  • Nicolas Massaly, PhD, Instructor, Anesthesiology
  • Sherree Wilson, PhD, Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

“We are thrilled to launch this summer research fellowship program,” said Robert Gereau, PhD, Vice Chair for Research for the Department of Anesthesiology and Executive Director of the ASSURE program. “We are all very excited to meet the upcoming cohort, build collaborative relationships with local institutions, and continue creating a pipeline of new talent.”
