This course is a part of the Self-Leadership Learning Path, a curated learning journey for WashU staff who want to lead with purpose, confidence and impact – no matter their role. This path offers six engaging instructor-led workshops (available virtually and in person) and three flexible on-demand courses, all designed to help you build the mindset, skillset and habits to lead from within. The sessions within the path do not need to be taken in a specific order, allowing you to progress at your own pace and based on your interests. These courses are available to all WashU staff and faculty at all levels.
Course Description: This comprehensive course is designed to enhance your communication skills and elevate your ability to influence and persuade effectively in the workplace. Throughout the course, you will learn to craft clear, concise messages tailored to diverse audiences, while developing active listening skills and mastering nonverbal communication to foster stronger interpersonal connections. In addition, the course delves into the fundamentals of influence and persuasion and how to apply them skillfully. You’ll gain practical tools to enhance your credibility, appeal to emotion, and implement a proven 3-step persuasion framework. Emphasizing the paradox that to increase influence, you must give away some control, this course equips individuals with the insights and strategies needed to become confident, impactful communicators and influential leaders.

Audience: This class is for all Washington University in St. Louis staff and faculty at any level (Leading Self, Others, or the Organization )
Facilitator: Juman Al Bukhari, PhD, EdD – Senior Consultant, HR Learning and Development
With a background in professorship, research, and expertise in higher education leadership, along with a doctorate in the field, Juman enjoys delivering, facilitating, and teaching courses that develop WashU employees’ critical thinking, creativity, interdisciplinary collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills. She incorporates theory and practice into her teaching to allow for practical exploration of real-life situations. Additionally, she actively fosters collaboration and strives to achieve organizational goals aligned with WashU’s mission and vision.
