Our success is intimately linked to the accomplishments of each and every member of our department. Each month, four members are nominated and featured to celebrate their commitment to patient care, education, and research.

Bianca Szafarowicz, MD
PGY-1 Resident
Bianca Ewa Szafarowicz is one of the new interns in the Department of Anesthesiology here at WashU. She grew up in the Chicago suburbs and played college basketball at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. After her athletic career ended, she began coaching high school basketball and working at a local hospital in Jefferson City to see if medicine and healthcare were in her future. Eventually, she went to the southwest and worked at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for a year. The short stay was quickly extended to finish her master’s degree and to start medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. At the end of her second year of medical school, she and her husband welcomed a baby boy named Tytus. He is not so little anymore, and much of her extra time is spent exploring all the family-friendly aspects of St. Louis, like the zoo, aquarium, and local parks. In addition to all the children’s attractions, she enjoys trying out new restaurants, breweries, live music, and sporting events. Bianca loves the winter for the snow. She learned how to ski when she was six years old, eventually transitioned to snowboarding, and has been hitting the slopes every winter since then. She heard about the Hidden Valley Ski Resort in Wildwood, MO, and is excited to visit this upcoming season. The last fun fact about Bianca is that she has had her Halloween decorations up since September 1!

Peter Haw, MSN, CRNA
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
Peter Haw graduated CRNA school in 2019 and has been a member of the Department of Anesthesiology since the spring of 2020. Additionally, Peter is a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserves where he also practices anesthesia. Prior to anesthesia school, Peter was an ICU nurse at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
Peter attended Missouri S&T where he played soccer and earned a degree in biology. Peter’s 2010 Men’s Soccer team was inducted into the Missouri S&T Hall of Fame after being the first team in school history to make it to and win a game in the NCAA tournament. Peter also holds a record for scoring the fastest goal in school history (11 seconds). Peter set the mile run record at his elementary school in 4th grade in the spring of 2001. It’s unclear if that record still stands. When Peter isn’t baking sourdough bread, riding his bike, or losing at fantasy football, he enjoys spending time with his fiancé, Carly, and their dog, Layla.

Daniel Fernandez, MD
Assistant Professor, Anesthesiology
Dr. Daniel Fernandez is an Assistant Professor in the Divisions of Regional & Ambulatory Anesthesiology and General Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Fernandez is a proud St. Louis native, returning after attending Southern Methodist University for his undergraduate studies in chemistry and biology before completing medical school at Indiana University. He graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine Anesthesiology Residency Program in 2020 and stayed to complete his fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain in 2021. He joined as faculty, and divides his time between the academic campus downtown and many of the community sites. He is also a Pod Leader in the ORs at the academic campus focusing on orthopedic, general, trauma, and plastic surgery working with surgeons and perioperative partners to improve patient care. He is passionate about bedside teaching, especially regional anesthesia.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Michelle, and their dog, Buster. His hobbies include cooking, brewing beer, relaxing with video games (he swears it helps with his ultrasound guided blocks), and 3D printing.

Jasmine Crane
Administrative Coordinator II, Division of Critical Care Medicine
Jasmine Crane is currently an Administrative Coordinator II in the Division of Critical Care Medicine for the Department of Anesthesiology. She has been with the division since 2017 and hopes to continue growing with Critical Care and Anesthesiology for the foreseeable future!
Jasmine came to St. Louis from Tallahassee with her boyfriend, AJ, and their two dogs (a dachshund named Toby and a pit bull mix named Harley) a year after graduating from Florida State University with a BA in Media/Communication Studies. Initially, wanting to become an investigative journalist, Jasmine has since found new interests and passions that keep her busy, such as baking, yoga, fitness activities, cooking, and traveling. She recently completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training in 2023 and is looking forward to continuing with that journey! She was born in Texas, and then lived in Alaska for 11 years before moving to north Florida to complete high school and college. Her move to STL is hopefully a big step toward getting her back out west where she feels most at home with the mountains and snow.
In her spare time, you can find Jasmine baking something delicious, taking various types of fitness classes, attempting to work through her to-be-read list of books, spending time with her boyfriend and puppers, and daydreaming about moving to the European countryside!
