We are pleased to announce that Lukas Matern, MD, will succeed Jason Gillihan, MD, MBA, as Medical Advisor to the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Barnes-Jewish College (Goldfarb). In this role, Dr. Matern will serve as a liaison between the program and faculty, CRNAs, physicians, trainees, and leaders across the Department of Anesthesiology and BJC, helping to support the educational mission of the program and its stakeholders.
Dr. Matern joined the department in 2024 as an Assistant Professor and currently serves as the Non-OR Anesthesia (NORA) POD Leader. He has quickly become recognized for his dedication to the educational experiences of learners across our department, including SRNAs, residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees. His commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments has earned recognition from multiple learner groups, including the Outstanding MD Clinical Instructor Award from the SRNA Class of 2025 and the department’s Outstanding Teacher Award from our residents in 2026. He was also among the inaugural recipients of the department’s 2025 WELCCOME Awards, recognizing his contributions to education, engagement, and community building.
For more than 12 years, Dr. Gillihan has served as Medical Advisor to the CRNA Program. During his tenure, he helped establish new clinical learning opportunities across our community hospital partners and played an integral role in the evolution of the program’s admissions processes through his leadership on the admissions committee. Through extensive collaboration within and beyond our department, Dr. Gillihan has been a steadfast advocate for students and a trusted advisor to faculty and program leadership. His commitment to excellence in education has contributed to the continued growth, innovation, and national recognition of our training programs, benefiting generations of learners across the anesthesiology educational continuum. We are grateful to Dr. Gillihan for his many years of dedicated service and partnership.
