In a gesture of unity and recognition of the importance of leadership, extended department leadership recently participated in a special excursion to the St. Louis Science Center for a guided tour of “Mandela: The Official Exhibit.” The purpose of the trip was to gain a deeper understanding of the profound legacy left by Nelson Mandela. This exhibit was more than just a display of historical artifacts; it was a captivating narrative woven with previously unseen film footage, photographs, and over 150 significant artifacts and personal mementos.
What truly set this exhibition apart was the sense of personal connection it offered. The Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Michael Avidan, MBBCh, personally led department members through the exhibition where many of the artifacts were on loan from the Mandela family, museums, and archives worldwide.
Following the tour, a thought-provoking discussion was held where colleagues shared their thoughts and reflections on the experience.
“Leadership is not just about guiding teams but also about being inspired and motivated by those who have left an indelible mark on the world,” said Avidan. “This experience allowed us a unique opportunity to view the world through the lens of Mandela himself, from his early days to his unwavering pursuit of justice and his enduring impact on the global stage. It was a meaningful step in acknowledging the importance of leadership in shaping a better future.”
