The Department of Anesthesiology is pleased to announce the appointment of Thomas J. Graetz, MD, MBA, as acting Interim Chief of Anesthesiology at Missouri Baptist Medical Center (MBMC), effective immediately.
Dr. Graetz has been an outstanding leader at WashU Medicine for many years. He is strongly committed to all of our department’s missions, and leads by example, and with integrity. In this exciting new leadership role, Dr. Graetz, in collaboration with other leaders, will work toward consolidating and advancing anesthesiology and perioperative services at MBMC.
Dr. Graetz earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Saint Louis University, where he also completed his medical degree. He went on to complete a transitional internship at Forest Park Hospital, followed by residency training in anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He returned to St. Louis to pursue fellowship training in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine at WashU Medicine.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Graetz joined the Department of Anesthesiology as faculty, where he has risen through the academic ranks to Professor. He has been a key clinical and operational leader across WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare, bringing significant expertise in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative services. Dr. Graetz currently serves as the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and the Critical Care Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Recovery ICU at Missouri Baptist Medical Center—roles he will continue while serving as Interim Chief.
A respected clinical and operational leader, he brings deep expertise in anesthesiology, critical care, and perioperative services to this role. His continued commitment to excellence in patient care, team development, and operational performance will be instrumental in advancing the department’s mission at MBMC and across WashU Medicine.
