The Department of Anesthesiology recently ranked fourth nationwide among anesthesiology departments in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the 2019 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings. The department received more than $13.2 million from the agency, and seven faculty ranked in the top 100 for total NIH funding to individual anesthesia principal investigators:

- Jose Moron-Concepcion, PhD (Washington University Pain Center)
- Yu-Qing Cao, PhD (Washington University Pain Center)
- Christopher Lingle, PhD (Division of Basic Research)
- Alex S. Evers, MD (Division of Basic Research)
- Zhou-Feng Chen, PhD (Center for Study of Itch and Sensory Disorders)
- Michael S. Avidan, MBBCh, FCASA
“The faculty in our department are really among the world leaders their fields,” said the department’s Vice-Chair for Research, Robert W. Gereau IV, PhD. “They consistently rank among the top-funded groups in the nation, but more importantly, they are conducting important and groundbreaking work that is foundational to the specialty of Anesthesiology.”
