Last year, the Department of Anesthesiology established a memorial award in honor of Sandy Hawes, a beloved staffing administrator, friend, and colleague. During Sandy’s 30+ years at Washington University, she touched many lives through her gentle spirit and kindness. Those who had the pleasure of working with Sandy remember her as dedicated, supportive, well-posed, an excellent communicator, and someone who always went above and beyond the call of duty.
This award honors the life and accomplishments of Sandy by recognizing an administrative staff member whose individual achievements and specific contributions to the Department of Anesthesiology have mirrored those of Sandy.
We are thrilled to announce the inaugural recipient of the Sandy Hawes Memorial Award goes to our Staffing Administrator, Jan Goffstein-Davis! Jan has been with the department for almost 44 years this December.
“Jan is such a dedicated employee and a true asset to the department,” said Audrey Vincent, Executive Director of Business Operations for the Department of Anesthesiology. “She works diligently on the daily scheduling operations – making sure we have the right staffing every single day. We are so grateful to have her in our department!”
Sandy’s sense of purpose and caring was palpable to all who knew her and had the distinct pleasure of working with her. She embodied all the best qualities of our department.
“It’s exceedingly rare to see the level of dedication to a department and its people, that Sandy “lived” day in and day out,” says Jason Gillihan, MD, division chief of anesthesiology at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital and associate director of clinical anesthesiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
“From the moment Sandy became ill, Jan stepped up and took the helm of our daily scheduling and staffing operations and made sure we never missed a beat,” continued Dr. Gillihan. “She has continued to serve with a level of dedication and distinction which is uncommon today. She is a valued colleague and friend, and I could not be prouder to see her become the inaugural recipient of this award.”
