Highlights from the Third Annual Women of WUDA Retreat

The Women of WUDA (WashU Medicine Department of Anesthesiology), affectionately known as WoW, hosted their third annual retreat on Saturday, April 5, at Barnett on Washington.  Women from the department gathered to connect, hear from women in medicine, and participate in wellness activities.

This year’s theme—Better Together: Unique Capabilities, Collaborative Success—came to life through a rich mix of workshops and speakers, wellness activities, and creative experiences. Each session offered participants a chance to pause, reflect, and reconnect—both with themselves and with one another.

The day began with an energizing networking session led by the Vice Chair of Well-being, Erin Herrera, CRNA. With warmth and humor, she encouraged attendees to step outside their comfort zones, embrace the power of connection, and not shy away from introducing themselves or striking up conversations. Her message was clear: meaningful relationships often start with something as simple as a mutual love of tennis—and those connections can open doors to new opportunities and growth.

Alicia Ott, MA, LPC, LCPC, led a powerful and practical session on communication and boundaries. Drawing on her expertise as a WashU Medicine staff therapist, Alicia offered tangible strategies for setting healthy limits and communicating with clarity and confidence.

A central highlight of the event was the interactive PACE workshop, which encouraged participants to reflect on how presence, authenticity, courage, and energy show up in their personal and professional lives. Facilitated by Business Director Melissa Bowman, the session allowed participants to practice deep listening, explore their values, and discuss real-world applications of these leadership traits.

“I had another great experience at WOW this year. It’s such a valuable opportunity to connect with other women in our department,” said Assistant Professor Bethany Pennington, PharmD, BCPS. “The event offers a fun, casual, and stress-free environment that makes networking feel natural and enjoyable.”

The event also provided space for informal conversation, networking, and celebration over food and refreshments. Whether it was a resident connecting with a staff member or a faculty member sharing insights from past career experiences, the atmosphere buzzed with laughter, support, and gratitude.

Attendees also expressed their appreciation for the day’s activities. “Erin’s talk on the different kinds of networking to consider was enlightening, and I loved being able to squeeze in some yoga, get a headshot, enjoy allergy-friendly snacks, and connect with women from all different backgrounds—all in such a unique venue!” said Allie Gordon, manager of clinical trials.

As the Women of WUDA initiative continues to grow, this year’s event reinforced the value of intentional spaces where everyone can gather, reflect, and lead with purpose.
