Goodin receives 2025 Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award

Burel Goodin, PhD

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs at WashU Medicine has selected Burel Goodin, PhD, professor of anesthesiology, as the recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award. This award recognizes a faculty member who provides exceptional mentorship to WashU postdoctoral appointees.

Award recipients are celebrated for their extraordinary commitment to supporting postdoctoral appointees intellectually, socially, and personally. They go above and beyond—offering their time, insight, and guidance to help postdocs advance their research, develop professionally, and thrive within nurturing academic environments.

One of Goodin’s mentees described his commitment to mentorship, praising him as someone who consistently exceeds expectations to help postdocs advance their research and scholarship, hone their professional development skills, and achieve their career and professional goals.

Goodin earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Illinois College, and a master’s degree in mental health and behavioral medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. He later earned a second master’s degree in clinical psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology with specialized training in behavioral medicine at the University of Maryland.

As a clinical health psychologist, Goodin specializes in pain-related behavioral medicine. His research focuses on the interplay between psychosocial and biobehavioral factors and the experience of pain—particularly how stress-related hormones and immune function contribute to pain perception.

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) will present the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award during the OPA Awards and Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
