Two anesthesiology faculty recognized by the Academy of Educators

At this year’s Education Day, hosted by the Academy of Educators at WashU Medicine, two faculty members from the Department of Anesthesiology were honored for their contributions to medical education. Allison Mitchell, MD, Vice Chair for Education and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, was inducted as a new member of the Academy, and Rachel Moquin, EdD, Associate Vice Chair for Faculty and Educator Development and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, received the Rising Star Award.

The Academy of Educators is an institutional collaboration of educators dedicated to advancing educational excellence and leadership in health science education. As part of the faculty development arm of the Office of Education, the Academy offers programs, workshops, grants, and awards that support educators’ growth. As a newly inducted member, Mitchell will join a network of like-minded faculty and take part in opportunities to further hone her skills and expand her impact as an educator.

Mitchell earned her Doctor of Medicine from UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her anesthesiology residency, serving as a chief resident, before pursuing an obstetric anesthesiology fellowship—both at WashU Medicine. Following her training in 2017, she was recruited as faculty and was appointed as the inaugural Associate Director for the Anesthesiology Residency Program in 2020. In her current role as Vice Chair for Education, overseeing departmental educational initiatives and collaborating with training program leaders across the department and institution.

“I’m honored to join the Academy of Educators and to be part of a community that’s so deeply committed to advancing medical education,” said Mitchell. “Teaching and mentoring are some of the most meaningful aspects of my work, and I’m excited to collaborate with colleagues across the institution to continue improving how we train and support future clinicians.”

In addition to Mitchell’s induction, current Academy member Rachel Moquin, EdD, was one of three WashU Medicine faculty members honored with the Rising Star Award at this year’s Education Day. Established in 2021, the Rising Star Award recognizes early career faculty who demonstrate outstanding promise as educators through contributions in educational service, leadership, and/or scholarship.

Together, Mitchell’s induction and Moquin’s recognition highlight the department’s growing leadership within the Academy of Educators and its continued commitment to educational innovation and excellence at WashU Medicine.
